Beware the Negative Ninja

Last week, we talked about becoming a Success Samurai—someone who embraces failure as part of the journey and uses it as fuel for growth.

But today, we’re going to talk about something just as important…

The enemy of the Success Samurai: the Negative Ninja.

Unlike the samurai, who faces challenges head-on with discipline and purpose, the Negative Ninja works in the shadows—quiet, sneaky, and destructive.

And here’s the truth…

That Negative Ninja exists in two places: within you and around you.

The Internal Negative Ninja 🥷

In martial arts, we train to anticipate an opponent’s attack.

But what happens when the attack comes from within?

The internal Negative Ninja shows up as:

  • “I’m not good enough.”
  • “I can’t do this.”
  • “I’ll probably fail.”

These thoughts are fast, quiet, and dangerous—just like a skilled opponent.

But here’s the key…

You don’t ignore the attack—you train to counter it.

Just like blocking a punch or redirecting a kick, you must intercept the thought.

When your mind says:

“I’m not good enough…”

You respond with:

“I’m training. I’m improving. I’m getting better every day.”

This is mental sparring.

This is discipline.

And just like physical training, the more you practice, the stronger you become.

The External Negative Ninjas 🥷

Not all negativity comes from within.

Some of it comes from the people and environments around you.

In martial arts, if you train with someone who constantly throws you off balance, disrespects the process, or brings negative energy…

It affects your performance.

Life is no different.

External Negative Ninjas can look like:

  • People who constantly criticize
  • People who doubt your goals
  • Environments that drain your energy
  • Social circles that normalize negativity

Just like in training, you must be aware of your surroundings.

You must choose your training partners wisely.

Surround yourself with people who:

  • Encourage growth
  • Support your journey
  • Push you to be better

Because energy is contagious.

And the wrong environment will quietly sabotage your progress.

Protect Your Stance

In Tang Soo Do, your stance is everything.

A strong stance gives you balance, power, and control.

A weak stance leaves you vulnerable.

Your mindset works the same way.

When you allow negative thoughts or negative people to shake your foundation…

You lose your balance in life.

But when you strengthen your mindset and protect your environment…

You become unshakable.

Go Where You Are Appreciated—Not Tolerated

This is one of the most important lessons you can learn.

Too many people stay in environments where they are merely tolerated…

Instead of stepping into spaces where they are truly valued.

Let me be clear:

You deserve to be appreciated.

In your training.
In your relationships.
In your life.

The right environment will:

  • Recognize your effort
  • Support your growth
  • Celebrate your progress

And when you find that…

You thrive.

From Negative Ninja to Success Samurai

The journey is simple—but not easy.

You must:

  • Defend against the internal Negative Ninja
  • Distance yourself from external Negative Ninjas
  • Strengthen your mental and emotional stance

Because this is how you become what we talked about last week…

A Success Samurai.

A warrior who:

  • Learns from failure
  • Stays disciplined
  • Chooses growth over comfort
  • And refuses to be controlled by negativity

Remember this:

Good imagination creates courage.
Bad imagination creates fear.
No imagination creates nothing.

Train your mind the same way you train your body.

Stay aware. Stay disciplined. Stay strong.

And above all…

Don’t be a Negative Ninja.
